Fill out the form to get started
If you’re searching for a gym in Brantford but aren’t sure whether CrossFit is right for you, Saravanan’s story is a pretty good place to start.
When Saravanan moved to Brantford, he was looking for a group fitness option that would help him get back on track. He had gained some weight through travel and stress and knew he wanted to make a change.
But there was one problem.
He was nervous about starting CrossFit.
He had spent time doing traditional gym workouts, but CrossFit was completely new territory. He worried about whether he could keep up with the workouts, whether his joints would handle it, and whether he might get injured.
Eight months later—with roughly five months of actual CrossFit training due to some breaks—his perspective has completely changed.
And one of the biggest things he’s learned?
His body is capable of a lot more than he thought.
Finding CrossFit in Brantford
Saravanan was relatively new to Brantford and started looking for group fitness classes in the area.
That’s how he found CrossFit Durst.
His goal was simple: he wanted to lose the weight he had gained, get moving again, and find something that would motivate him to consistently show up.
The group workout environment appealed to him because he knew having other people around would help keep him accountable.
And it did.
Today, CrossFit has become something that motivates him to get up and show up in the morning.
“Motivates me every morning to get up and show up.”
That consistency has become one of the biggest changes for him.
“I Never Thought I Could Do Some of These Workouts”
One of Saravanan’s favourite parts of his CrossFit journey has been discovering what his body can actually do.
Before starting, Olympic lifting movements and other CrossFit skills were completely unfamiliar.
Now, he has learned movements like the push press and power clean—things he had never done before coming to CrossFit.
That has given him a completely different perspective on fitness.
His biggest surprise?
Realizing what his body is capable of.
He came into CrossFit worried about whether he could do the workouts.
Now, he’s looking ahead to his next challenges.
Wall walks/handstand work. Rope climbs. New movements. New goals.
That shift—from “Can I do this?” to “What can I learn next?”—is a huge part of what makes starting something new so rewarding.
The CrossFit Community Made the Difference
For Saravanan, his favourite thing about CrossFit Durst isn’t just the workouts.
It’s the community.
Before moving to Brantford, he lived in a larger city where interactions could feel very different.
As he puts it, people might say hello and move on.
At CrossFit Durst, he found something different.
People work together. They encourage each other. They care about whether the person beside them finishes their workout.
And that has made a big impact on his experience.
The coaching has also been a major part of that.
Rather than simply being handed a workout and left to figure it out, Saravanan appreciates getting individual feedback from coaches—including help correcting his posture and technique.
That’s an important part of what makes a good CrossFit gym different from simply walking into a traditional gym.
You aren’t expected to know everything when you start.
That’s what coaching is for.
From Being Worried About Injury to Feeling Ready for the Next Challenge
One of Saravanan’s biggest misconceptions about CrossFit was that it might be too difficult or too hard on his joints.
He was concerned about injury and wasn’t sure whether his body could handle CrossFit workouts.
But with proper coaching, scaling, and time, his experience changed.
His body adapted.
And now?
He’s ready for new challenges.
That’s an important lesson for anyone considering CrossFit for the first time.
You don’t need to walk through the doors already knowing how to lift a barbell, do a pull-up, climb a rope, or perform a handstand.
You start where you are.
The workouts can be modified to match your current fitness level, and you build from there.
Would Saravanan Recommend On-Ramp?
Absolutely.
For someone new to CrossFit, one of the most intimidating parts can be walking into their first class and wondering if everyone else will know what they’re doing.
That’s exactly why our On-Ramp program at CrossFit Durst exists.
It’s designed to help new members learn the fundamentals, become comfortable with the movements, understand how CrossFit works, and build confidence before jumping fully into group classes.
And Saravanan’s advice for anyone who’s nervous?
“Give it a try for 2 weeks.”
We couldn’t agree more.
You don’t have to decide if CrossFit is going to be your thing forever.
Just give yourself enough time to actually experience it.
“Worth Investing in Ourselves”
We asked Saravanan what he would say to someone who thinks CrossFit is too expensive.
His answer was simple:
“Worth investing on ourselves.”
Because the value isn’t just the workout.
You’re investing in your health, strength, movement, coaching, accountability, and the ability to perform better in the other activities you enjoy.
Fitness isn’t just about what happens inside the gym.
It’s about having a body that allows you to live your life better outside of it.
His One Regret? Not Starting Sooner
If Saravanan could go back to the day he started CrossFit, there’s one thing he’d tell himself:
“Should have started CrossFit workout early in my 30s.”
But there’s another lesson hiding in that statement.
You don’t have to wait for the perfect time.
You don’t have to wait until you’re fitter.
You don’t have to wait until you lose weight.
You don’t have to wait until you’re confident.
You can start exactly where you are.
What’s Next for Saravanan?
He’s already looking toward his next goals.
A stronger handstand.
A rope climb.
More skills.
More challenging workouts.
And, most importantly, continuing to show up.
That’s what we love about Saravanan’s story.
He didn’t start CrossFit because he was already an athlete.
He started because he wanted to feel better, lose some weight, find motivation, and challenge himself.
Along the way, he discovered a community, learned movements he’d never done before, and realized his body was capable of much more than he thought.
And that’s exactly what we hope every new member at CrossFit Durst experiences.
